T Bone Burnett has earned fame and recognition for several years as a producer, most notably for spearheading the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack as well as his work with Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Review. But Burnett has also been a fine vocalist and songwriter dating back to the ‘70s, and this week both that legacy and his newest compositions will be celebrated with the release of two Burnett sets.
Twenty Twenty — The Essential T Bone Burnett (Sony/Legacy) features 40 cuts on two discs. These include Burnett’s collaboration with Elvis Costello (under the guise of the Coward Brothers), material done with the Alpha Band, and stirring versions of country, blues and even pre-rock standards.
That set is accompanied by The True False Identity (Sony/Legacy), the first disc of new Burnett fare in nearly 14 years. Such cuts as “Palestine Texas,” “Fear Country,” “Blinded by The Darkness” and the concluding number “Shaken Rattled and Rolled” show that Burnett’s sturdy playing and singing haven’t been dulled by his years on the other side of the microphone.
