A Disctastic Weekend

Bad-A Barry and Dastardly Dave visited Chastized Charlie at Stately Millson Manor for a weekend of disc, food, disc, laughter, and disc.

The saga began with incorrect directions and went down-hill from there. Arriving Saturday afternoon, the trio played the new Horn Lake Latimer Lakes course, a 9-holer, twice. Despite the openness of some holes and the shortness of others, the preponderance of Crataegus Phaenopyrum, the Washington Hawthorne, dominated the course. Drawing blood and curses from the three, the sharp-thorned trees played havoc with holes and discs, but proved fun overall. Competition from a dog named Zeus and some local goobers (and a menacing lake on the first hole) did not interfere with a generally good round, despite Barry almost losing his mojo-producing Stingray on #6 (a hole now named "The Lost Sheep"). Other monikers produced by the round include "Crown of Thorns" (#5), "Road To Damascus" (#7), "Elijah" (#9), and "Galilee/Walking on the Water" (#1).

The evening wore on with oven-roasted duck breasts and an exclusive showing of The Aristocrats.

Sunday morning worship service began with waffles and continued at the new Southaven/Central Park 18 hole course (also known as Hell). The designers of said course were either a.)sadists b.)ball golf course designers or c.)both. Never had any of the three seen a course as long and frustrating. And, in another first, all three players lost a beloved disc to the streams of the course. Barry's sacred Stingray, Charlie's Orc, and Dave's new yellow driver were all offered up as sacrifices to the golfing gods. The three discs now lie in a common grave of muddy water, not 150 yards from each other.

The highlight of the weekend was possibly brunch; Brother Juniper's. Other Chubs may remember this delectable dive from earlier Memphis trips. The service was good, the food better.

Early afternoon's golfing took place at the Johnson Road 9 hole course in Germantown. The shortish course in a public park behind The Germantown Millionare Baptist Church yielded much fun at first, until hole 6. The notes taken from the internet said that the basket was hidden from the tee pad; so, in faith (it being Sunday and all), all threw tee shots in the direction the tee pad pointed. After a second throw still produced no basket in sight, the group decided that there WAS no basket for hole number 6. That put a decided damper on the course, especially for Dave, who had his best two throws of the day toward the non-existent target.

The Chubtingent closed the overcast day with a final 9 at Latimer Lakes, being chased by an approaching sundown and chastened by the hawthornes.

Sunday evening saw the Chubs feasting on home-made pizza from Padre's Pizzaria and enjoying the documentary "Ringers" about LOTR fans.

A grand time had by all.

We take a moment, however, to remember our fallen discs which no longer grace our bags.

Die You Bastard

Yes, I be, proudly, Dork,
Who tried in vain to throw an Orc

'Cross holes designed by those who dwell
In Satan's lair, a disker's Hell.

'Neath dread and dreary darkened sky
With caution to the wind did fly

The fated Orc, so proudly flew
Into the stream that looked like poo.

Now lieth there in watery grave
His life for golfing gods did give
Until that day a child may find
And rise again the Orc to live.
